Vagmi Intonation and Accent Module

While speaking, there is a deliberate change of pitch pattern – rise, fall, rise-fall (hat) or continuous fall etc over an entire utterance. This pattern of variation in pitch is called intonation. In a lively voice, there is a large and meaningful range of pitch change. In a monotone or dull or lazy voice, the pitch change is highly restricted and remains almost the same. Over-exaggerated changes in pitch sounds comical. These problems can be corrected by making the client aware of the range and pattern of pitch change being used. Intonation also carries information about the speaker’s emotional status.

How does Vagmi Intonation work?

The variation in pitch over the length of an utterance is measured while a client speaks and it is determined if the client’s voice has some intonation or is dull, flat or monotone.

By testing the steadiness in voice, this module also helps as a preliminary screening tool of a voice disorder. This feature can also be used for practicing to sing a musical note at a particular appropriate pitch. Also, the same program may be used to measure the range of pitch– lowest to highest. By displaying the volume instead of the pitch, rhythmic patterns of short and long vowels in syllables also may be displayed.

Intonation pattern to be used for an utterance is very much specific to a language. It carries information such as: (a) grammatical structure (phrase boundaries), (b) semantic stress (c) emphasis (c) semantic structure (assertive, interrogative or exclamatory). Such language dependent changes in intonation primarily contributes to accent.

When a person familiar with a language, such as the mother tongue, speaks a non-native language, it is easily noticeable. This is largely because of the improper usage of language specific intonation. Conscious effort has to be made to learn the intonation pattern of the desired language to be learned.

Further, in case of tonal languages, such as Punjabi, Chinese, the pitch change of a syllable in a word changes the meaning itself.

How does Vagmi Accent Module work?

This feature is language independent. A model utterance of any language can be recorded and saved. This model intonation pattern to be achieved can be displayed in the upper window. The intonation of the client’s production is shown in the lower window for comparison to achieve the desired intonation of the chosen language. The client can also listen to the model utterance and compare it with his/her own production thus getting close and achieving the desired intonation pattern.

For learning an accent using this software, one requires a ‘model intonation’ of the desired accent/ language to be learnt.
